I read an article recently by Arundhati Parmar, who is a reporter at MedCity News. In it she she wrote about healthcare consumer and divided them into 6 categories ::

Casual and cautious :: make up 34% of the US healthcare consumer

  • this group are not engaged in their own health
  • have no immediate need to consume health services
  • are very cost conscious

Content and complaint :: make up 22% of the US healthcare consumer

  • this group are happy with their physicians, hospital and insurance plans
  • tend to comply with and follow care plans

Online and onboard :: make up 17% of the US healthcare consumer

  • this group are keen to learn about health online
  • are happy with their healthcare
  • but they are looking for alternatives and for new technologies

Sick and savvy :: make up 14% of the US healthcare consumer

  • because of their conditions, this group consumes significant healthcare products and services
  • they communicate, and partner with, their physicians to make treatment decisions

Out and about :: make up 9% of the US healthcare consumer

  • this group believes in looking for alternative healthcare options
  • they prefer to customize the services they wish to consume

Shop and save :: make up 4% of the US healthcare consumer

  • this group actively look to save money
  • they are willing to switch product and services for better value
