Short answer: You prove AI search is working by reporting what traffic reports can’t see: how often AI engines show and cite you, and how well the visitors they send convert. Track four numbers: AI impressions, citation share, AI-referred conversions and branded search demand. Report them next to traffic, not instead of it. In Nicola Ziady’s 5 Shifts Marketing Leadership Framework, this is Shift 5: From Data to Insight.
Proving AI Search: By the Numbers
| The number | What it means for you | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 54%of CEOs and CFOs feel confident in their CMO’s ability to prove marketing’s value | Nearly half your C-suite already doubts the proof. Falling clicks make that harder. | Gartner, Feb 2025 |
| 69%of CEOs and CFOs say failing to deliver promised results would most likely get a CMO removed | Proof isn’t a reporting task. It’s job security. | Gartner, Feb 2025 |
| 61%drop in organic click rate on Google searches showing AI Overviews, 2024 to 2025 | Your traffic report will show decline even when your visibility grows. | Seer Interactive |
| 42%more often AI-referred visitors converted than other traffic to US retailers, March 2026 | Fewer visits, better visits. Report conversion, not just volume. | Adobe Digital Insights |
| 37%higher revenue per visit from AI-referred traffic, March 2026 | Each AI visitor is worth more. That’s the line your CFO cares about. | Adobe Digital Insights |
| 35%higher organic click rate for sites cited in AI Overviews | Being cited still drives clicks. (A correlation, not proven cause.) | Seer Interactive |
| June 3, 2026Google added a Generative AI report to Search Console | You can now see AI Overview and AI Mode impressions in a free tool. Impressions only, and still rolling out. | Google Search Central |
| May 13, 2026Microsoft Clarity’s Citations dashboard became generally available | Free tracking of which pages AI cites and the queries it used to find them. Covers Copilot and Bing only. | Microsoft Clarity, via PPC Land |
| 0.392correlation between branded search volume and AI Overview visibility | Branded search is a proof point you already track. Put it in the AI report. | Ahrefs, May 2025 |
| 393%growth in AI traffic to US retailers, Q1 2026 vs. a year earlier | The channel is small but growing fast. Measure it now, while the baseline is low. | Adobe, via TechCrunch |
Proving AI Search Works: The Answers
Why don’t traffic reports prove AI search is working?
Because AI answers reduce clicks even when you’re visible. Seer Interactive found organic click rates on searches showing AI Overviews fell 61% between 2024 and 2025. If you report traffic alone, good work looks like decline.
What should CMOs measure instead?
3 numbers, reported next to traffic ::
01
Seen: AI visibility.
How often AI shows or names you. Check Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, for the questions your buyers ask most.
02
Chosen: AI-referred conversions.
What visitors from AI assistants do when they arrive: sign up, apply, apply.
03
Remembered: branded search.
How many people search for you by name. It was one of the three strongest signals of AI Overview visibility in Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands.
It’s the share of AI answers that mention you. Pick a fixed set of questions your buyers ask, run them through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode each month, and count the answers that name or link you. Cited in 12 of 40 questions means a 30% citation share.
Google added a Generative AI report to Search Console on June 3, 2026. It shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device, but not clicks, and it’s still rolling out. Microsoft Clarity’s Citations dashboard, generally available since May 13, 2026, shows which pages AI cites and the queries it used, for Copilot and Bing.
Show fewer visits next to better visits. Adobe found AI-referred visitors to US retailers converted 42% more often than other traffic in March 2026, with 37% higher revenue per visit. Retail isn’t every industry, but the direction is the argument: AI sends fewer, readier buyers.
The early evidence says yes. Seer Interactive found sites cited in AI Overviews earned 35% higher organic click rates and 91% higher paid click rates than those not cited. Seer notes it can’t prove the citation caused the lift.
Monthly, using the same questions every time. AI answers change from one run to the next, so a single check proves little. A monthly trend proves a lot.
